Mobile outpatient occupational therapy practice proudly serving older adults in Virginia

Falls are a threat to the health of older adults and can reduce their ability to remain independent.
The CDC notes that every second of every day, an older adult—age 65 and older—falls. Falls are preventable and we can help!

In Virginia, falls are the leading cause of injury related hospitalization and injury death for the elderly (age 65 and older). Over 498 million dollars were billed for fall-related hospitalizations, for a median charge per episode of care of $23,015 following a fall. The average length of stay in the hospital was 5 days.

Occupational Therapists are the only professionals recognized by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) to make recommendations for home modifications for persons with disabilities. An independent study published in Medical Care Research and Review found that “occupational therapy is the only spending category where additional hospital spending has a statistically significant association with lower readmission rates” for the three health conditions studied: heart failure, pneumonia, and acute myocardial infarction. Aging in place, reducing falls and hospitalization admissions, and promoting independence and safety are all critical areas that occupational therapy can address.

Occupational therapy assessment of the client and home followed by home modifications to reduce falls for clients with a history of falls, enhancing safety. • Home modification and adaptive equipment provided by occupational therapy practitioners to reduce functional decline and improve safety.
